Canaan Avalon Mini 3: A Great Surprise for Mining and Heating at Home!

di Romain Schlick

Can you mine Bitcoin at home while heating your living space? That is the promise of Canaan's Avalon Mini 3. In this 2025 video (in French), we unbox the machine, set it up step by step with the mobile app and check its real-world performance. The verdict: a very pleasant surprise.

A Bitcoin miner designed like a radiator

The Avalon Mini 3 is a Bitcoin miner built for the home: it mines and heats at the same time. It is rated at 37.5 TH/s for about 800 W, an efficiency of 21 W per TH/s (21 J/TH). Its elongated shape looks like a radiator, and that is intentional: you can really feel the heat, with one section where the warm air comes out.

The machine offers three operating modes:

  • Mining: maximum mining power;
  • Heater: you choose a target temperature, with an Eco mode and a Super mode;
  • Night: among other things, it lets you switch off the machine's light so it does not disturb you. We did not test it.

A carefully packaged machine

It is one of the best machines we have tested in terms of the quality of the packaging, the manual and the cables supplied. In the box you will find:

  • a European-format power cable;
  • a user manual in English, and also in French;
  • a small USB Wi-Fi dongle to connect the machine wirelessly;
  • a pouch with a card and a QR code.

The machine comes with a one-year warranty. It also has a small LED screen that shows, among other things, the time and its IP address.

Setting up the machine with the Avalon Family app

  1. Download the Avalon Family app on your phone.
  2. The first time, turn on Bluetooth and GPS, and disable power-saving mode if your phone has one.
  3. Add the machine, which is detected over Bluetooth, then enter your Wi-Fi network details.
  4. Once connected, the app displays the machine's information in real time.

In our test, power consumption was around the announced 800 W and the real-time hashrate showed 39.34 TH/s, against 37.5 TH/s announced.

Configuring the mining pool

We use the French pool Cruxpool. In the pool settings, make sure you enter stratum+tcp:// followed by the pool URL and its port. In the user field, enter your Bitcoin address followed by a dot and the nickname you want to give the machine, which is handy for telling machines apart if you have several. You can configure up to three pools.

Monitoring, safety and web interface

The app is not only for setup. It also lets you:

  • check the condition of the dust filter, shown as a percentage;
  • see the fan speed and the network latency to the pool ("ping to pool");
  • turn the machine's small screen on or off, increase its brightness and change its mode;
  • switch the machine off remotely, which is very handy.

The machine also has a safety feature. By tilting it too far during our test, we triggered it: the machine stopped mining and displayed "fall", as if it had fallen over.

Finally, to configure it from a computer on the same network, simply enter the machine's IP address in your browser to reach its administration interface. However, we do most of the settings from the app.
