New Models and Profitability – April 2025
Which new ASIC miners are coming to market, and how much do they earn? In this video (in French), we review the latest releases, from Canaan's quiet Bitcoin miners to the new Kaspa, Aleo and Dogecoin machines, giving the price, monthly income and payback time of each one.
Video from April 2025: the prices, income and payback times below date from that time. They change with cryptocurrency prices and mining difficulty.
Mining Bitcoin at home: the Canaan Avalon Mini 3 and Avalon Q
Canaan is betting on machines designed for the home: they run quietly, heat your living space and earn you Bitcoin at the same time.
- Avalon Mini 3: 37 TH/s for 800 W. It looks like a radiator and heats like an 800 W radiator. It is already available, and we were due to receive one the following week to test it.
- Avalon Q: 90 TH/s for about 1,600 W, an efficiency of 18.5 J/TH. It offers three modes: Super (1,600 W), Standard (1,300 W) and Eco (800 W). It is rated at 45 decibels, compared with 75 to 80 decibels for Bitmain's traditional machines.
Kaspa: the KS7s double the hashrate, the KS5s at slashed prices
Two new generations of Kaspa miners are arriving, with twice the hashrate of the previous models:
- IceRiver KS7: 30 TH/s, compared with 15 TH/s for the KS5M. Priced at around €5,700, for income of about €440 per month, i.e. a payback time of about 13 months. Delivery expected around early May.
- Bitmain Antminer KS7: 40 TH/s, compared with 20 TH/s for the KS5. It earns close to €600 per month (about €580), for a payback time of about 12 months. The machine is announced for the end of May.
In our view, the real bargain right now is the previous generation. The KS5 Pro (21 TH/s), which used to cost around €3,000 to €3,200, was still at €1,600 the day before filming, and the KS5 (20 TH/s) was also still around €1,600. That brings the payback time under 6 months.
On the network side, the Kaspa hashrate had peaked at about 1.5 EH/s, then fell from December onwards to around 1 EH/s.
Aleo: the IceRiver AE0 and AE1 Lite
- IceRiver AE0: 60 MH/s for 100 W. It can already be found in pre-stock, but at a high price; from the May batch it costs €1,200. It earns about €250 per month, i.e. a payback time of just under 5 months.
- IceRiver AE1 Lite: 300 MH/s for 500 W, i.e. five times the power draw and five times the hashrate of the AE0. It costs €3,800 and earns between €1,000 and €1,500 per month, which gives a payback time of about two and a half months. To get the same hashrate, you would need to buy five AE0s, i.e. €6,000.
Our word of warning: as with any new cryptocurrency, the arrival of ASICs quickly drives up the hashrate and the mining difficulty. These very short payback times are therefore likely to get longer.
Bitcoin: Antminer S19k Pro or S21+?
- Antminer S19k Pro 120 TH/s: about €1,540, with a built-in high-power mode for extra hashrate. It earns about €160 per month, i.e. a payback time of just under 10 months.
- Antminer S21+ 225 TH/s: €4,100, for €300 to €310 per month, i.e. a payback time of about 13 months. Its efficiency improves to 16.5 J/TH, compared with 23 J/TH for the S19k Pro.
The S21+ takes 3 months longer to pay for itself, but it is a machine that uses much less power, is more powerful and will be easier to resell later, since it is more recent. The more powerful models in the series, the S21 Pro (230 TH/s) and the S21 XP (270 TH/s), are on the other hand considered too expensive: their payback time is close to two years (20 to 24 months).
To mine, we recommend Cruxpool, a French pool with servers based in France. Another practical point: there is no need to create an account or go through KYC verification.
Dogecoin: ElphaPex DG1+ versus Bitmain
- ElphaPex DG1+ 14 GH/s: €6,500. It earns a little over €400 per month, i.e. a payback time of about 16 months. It is less efficient than the Bitmain machine (about 280 J/GH versus 200 J/GH), but ElphaPex is considered a fairly reliable brand.
- Bitmain 15 GH/s: €8,600, i.e. €2,000 more for 1 extra GH/s, but with better efficiency. It earns about €430 per month, i.e. a payback time of about 20 months.
Despite its lower efficiency, the ElphaPex therefore pays for itself faster than the Bitmain model.
