Mining Profitability at the End of May 2025: How Much Does It Earn Right Now?
How much does an ASIC miner earn right now, and how long does it take to pay for itself? In this video (in French), we review the main machines on the market for Bitcoin, Kaspa, Dogecoin, Aleo, Alephium, Kadena and CKB, giving the monthly income and payback time of each, with and without electricity costs.
Video recorded on 27 May 2025: the prices, coin prices and income below date from that time.
Update: Kadena is dead. The organisation behind Kadena ceased operations in October 2025 and KDA lost more than 60% of its value within hours. The Kadena earnings and Kadena miners (Antminer KA3 and others) covered in this article are no longer relevant.
Two scenarios: free electricity, or hosting at 7 cents
For each machine, we calculate two payback times:
- with no electricity cost, if you do not pay for your electricity;
- hosted abroad, with electricity at 7 US cents per kWh.
We did not run the numbers at the standard French rate (10, 15 or even 20 cents): at that price, you are not really looking for profitability. You need to be below 10 cents, and ideally at 7 or 8 cents per kWh at most. Some businesses, or individuals with solar panels, manage to get close to that kind of rate.
Bitcoin: Antminer S19k Pro and S21+
On 27 May 2025, Bitcoin was close to $110,000. In one year, the mining difficulty rose from about 84 T to 120 T, an increase of about 43%. The higher the difficulty, the fewer bitcoins the same machine produces.
- Antminer S19k Pro 120 TH/s (€1,500): about $205, i.e. €180 per month, and a payback time of eight and a half months. At 7 cents, about €60 per month is left, i.e. about 25 months.
- Antminer S21+ 225 TH/s (€4,450): about $370, i.e. €325 per month, and a payback time of thirteen and a half months. At 7 cents, about €175 per month is left, i.e. about 25 months.
The S21+ uses at least 30 to 40% less power than the S19k Pro: with the same electrical capacity, you can install more machines.
For the home, Canaan also offers machines that mine Bitcoin while heating: the Avalon Mini 3 (37.5 TH/s for 800 W), designed like a radiator, which we tested in our Avalon Mini 3 video, and a box-shaped model built on the same idea (90 TH/s for about 1,600 W).
On the pool side, we present our pool, a new French pool that lets you mine both Bitcoin and Kaspa. It runs on three servers behind a load balancer, so you only have one address to enter in your machines.
Kaspa: KS5 Pro and KS7
Kaspa had climbed back above $0.10. The network hashrate, which peaked at 1.5 EH/s at the end of last year, has slowly come down and is stabilising at around 1 EH/s.
- KS5 Pro 21 TH/s (€2,200): $273, i.e. €240 per month, and a payback time of 9 months. At 7 cents, about €100 per month is left, i.e. 20 to 22 months. With its price drop, the machine is becoming very attractive again.
- KS7 40 TH/s (€7,000): twice as powerful, drawing about 3,000 W, but the price more than doubles. It earns about €480 per month, i.e. a payback time of about 15 months. At 7 cents, about €350 per month is left, i.e. about 20 months.
With electricity at 7 cents, the KS7 is even slightly more profitable than the S21+.
Dogecoin: ElphaPex DG1+ and Antminer L9
Dogecoin was at $0.23, after falling to $0.15. It is recovering a little, but the "altseason" has not started yet.
- ElphaPex DG1+ 14 GH/s (€7,900): about €500 per month, i.e. a payback time of 16 months. At 7 cents, about €300 per month is left, i.e. 26 months.
- Antminer L9 16 GH/s (€10,600): nearly $600, i.e. €530 per month, and a payback time of 20 months. At 7 cents, about €400 per month is left, i.e. 26 months.
Aleo and Alephium: caution required
Aleo was worth just under $0.20 and had lost 94% in a year: we advise caution with this type of cryptocurrency. The IceRiver AE1 Lite (€3,400) earns $358, i.e. €315 per month, for a payback time of just over 10 months, and about 11 months at 7 cents. But the mining difficulty keeps rising, with new ASICs coming online in recent weeks.
Alephium was at $0.44: it had dropped sharply and has not recovered yet. The IceRiver AL3 (€2,800) earns €180 per month, i.e. a payback time of 15 months without electricity costs. At 7 cents, only about €25 per month is left, and the payback time stretches to 112 months.
Kadena and CKB: Antminer KA3 and K7
- Antminer KA3 (Kadena, €2,200): $272, i.e. €240 per month, and a payback time of only 9 months. Its price has probably never been this low. At 7 cents, €100 per month is left, i.e. 22 months.
- Antminer K7 (CKB, Nervos Network, about €3,500): €230 per month, i.e. a payback time of 15 months without electricity costs. At 7 cents, only €90 per month is left, and it stretches to 38 months.
Our advice: if your electricity is not cheap and you are interested in cryptocurrencies, you are better off buying cryptocurrencies than mining them.
