A tour of mining YouTubers (our FR & US picks)

by Romain Schlick

Which YouTube channels should you follow to learn about mining, compare hardware or think through your strategy? In this video (in French), we give an overview of YouTubers who specialise in cryptocurrency mining, French-speaking first and then English-speaking, presented from the smallest to the largest number of subscribers. The aim is not to judge anyone: each channel has its own speciality and style, and the idea is simply to help you discover new ones.

Video from 2022: the subscriber numbers and topics mentioned below date from that time. See "What about today?" at the end of the article.

French-speaking channels focused on mining

  • A small channel run by a "big" miner: the list starts with a small YouTuber whose name we admit we do not know how to pronounce. He is first and foremost a miner, with a lot of rigs: you can see him build 50 of them in a single week, for example, which takes a big budget. He shares solid hands-on experience on his channel.
  • Makertronic: very active at the time, with a new video every two or three days. His content is fairly technical: tutorials on solo mining, many tutorials on Ergo, mining lesser-known cryptocurrencies, advice and news. On that last point, we sound a note of caution: many of these small coins are "shitcoins", so think carefully before you start.
  • Jeanjean la bricole: he runs a few rigs at home and shares his day-to-day life as a miner, with tutorials and short advice videos. Together with others, he also set up a pool to mine Raptoreum, and a whole community talks on his Discord.
  • Staygeek (25,000 subscribers at the time): his channel follows his life as a miner and how his farm has evolved, from lots of graphics cards at first to a move to ASICs; he had just presented a Jasminer, an Etchash ASIC. He also talks about his strategies, tests hardware and publishes a few tutorials.

French-speaking channels on crypto in general

  • Crypto LFDM (formerly La Ferme du Mineur): a channel backed by a community with its own Discord. The videos focus on explanations and tutorials, and not only about mining: exchange platform reviews, automated investment bots, explanations about stablecoins, and several videos on taxation.
  • Monsieur TK: the Belgian YouTuber who needs no introduction. He publishes tutorials on setting up a Flux node or mining Flux, tests graphics cards and ASICs and is never shy about giving his opinion, and hosts weekly live streams on crypto news. He too covers crypto in general, not just mining.
  • Julien Roman: very regular videos on investing in cryptocurrencies rather than pure mining, with his strategies and advice. He sometimes touches on mining: we found his video on Bitcoin interesting. He also talks about projects such as STEPN and move-to-earn.
  • Hasheur: one step further up. He appears on the French news channel BFM TV and has a whole ecosystem of companies, such as Just Mining. His videos are mainly about news, crypto investment and draft legislation rather than mining, but they are still interesting.

Do you know others? Feel free to share them in the comments of the video.

English-speaking channels: hardware and a miner's life

On the American and Canadian side, you will notice that many channels have fun little logos and mascots.

  • ChumpChangeXD Mining & Crypto: lots of hardware tests, ASICs in particular, and a look at his life as a miner. Quite a variety of topics.
  • Rabid Mining: a channel we follow a little less. He had recently tested Etchash ASICs such as the iPollo and was one of the first to talk about Ergo.
  • The Hobbyist Miner: fairly technical tutorials on small builds to improve airflow around mining rigs, videos comparing graphics cards with Etchash ASICs such as the iPollo, and videos on the Helium project and mining on that network with dedicated devices.

English-speaking channels: strategy and profitability

  • Red Fox Crypto (about 60,000 subscribers): one of our favourite YouTubers. Lots of tests and thoughtful videos on mining: the upcoming Ethereum Merge, the postponed "difficulty bomb", ETH and ETC ASICs such as the iPollo, graphics cards. He was one of the first to do live streams on unlocking LHR cards, and he explains what he mines and why.
  • Sebs FinTech Channel (80,000 subscribers): our favourite, or very nearly. Very active, he produces plenty of profitability calculations and simulations: is it better to buy crypto than to mine it, are solar panels worth installing, which graphics cards to choose (with Excel spreadsheets to back it up). He also reflects on the future of mining and on how to approach buying a graphics card with its resale value in mind.
  • Red Panda Mining: the biggest channel in the list. More focused on a miner's life and machine tests, with many partnerships, notably around Octominer products. He was testing ASICs such as the iPollo and the Jasminer at the time, but remains a GPU miner first and foremost.

A tip for following videos in English

Not comfortable with English? Here is our tip for French speakers: in the YouTube player settings, turn on subtitles, choose "Auto-translate" and select your language. You can then follow the American channels with subtitles in your own language.

What about today?

Many of the topics mentioned (LHR unlocking, choosing graphics cards, Etchash ASICs) belong to the era of Ethereum GPU mining, which ended when Ethereum moved to proof of stake on 15 September 2022. The channels featured may have changed since then, as have their subscriber numbers.
