Easy Mining OS tutorial & review. An easy-to-use French OS?

by Romain Schlick

For mining with graphics cards, the best-known options are Windows with NiceHash, or HiveOS. In this video (in French), we install and test an alternative: Easy Mining OS (EMOS), an operating system dedicated to mining and developed in France, which has its advantages for support and documentation. From installation to verdict, is it really easy to use?

Video from 2022: the interface, features and price described below date from that time. See "What about today?" at the end of the article.

1. Create an account and prepare the SSD

Installation takes just a few steps:

  1. Create an account on the Easy Mining OS website: this account gives you a private key, which links your rig to your account.
  2. Download the OS image from the website.
  3. Flash the image onto an SSD with software such as Balena Etcher, which makes it very easy.
  4. Enter your key: on the SSD, open the cle.txt file, where the private key is set to "xxx" by default, and replace that value with your own key.
  5. Plug the SSD into the rig and start it.

2. Get to grips with the web interface

Once the rig has started, everything is managed from the web version of Easy Mining OS, with a general dashboard showing the status of your rigs. For the test, we connected a rig with a single card, an RTX 3070. First surprise: by default, the rig started mining straight away, with no overclocking applied to the card.

3. Add a wallet and create a template

To mine for your own account, start by adding your wallet address. You then create a template, the equivalent of a HiveOS flight sheet: it sets which cryptocurrency to mine, on which mining pool, with which mining software and to which wallet.

As for software, you will find the main miners of the time, including T-Rex Miner, NBMiner, lolMiner and GMiner, plus a few others.

4. Overclocking and local access to the rig

The graphics card profiles let you set the overclock, including the power limit. One gap we noticed: we could not find the card's memory type and brand anywhere, which is useful information when choosing overclocking settings.

Another handy feature: from the interface, the rig's internal IP address opens a rig manager that lets you act directly on the machine: miner console, starting and stopping the miner, loading a template, rebooting and viewing the logs.

EMOS Plus, support and verdict

There is a paid plan, EMOS Plus, with a trial period by default (several weeks, possibly a month). As we understood it, it then costs about €2 per month, for up to 20 rigs. It adds remote SSH access, a Telegram bot for notifications and a proxy system for certain mining pools. In our view, that is not expensive.

Support in French is a real strength: we had problems at first with a somewhat unusual motherboard, and the Easy Mining OS Discord answered us very quickly. One question remained open for us: how templates handle a rig that mixes NVIDIA and AMD cards.

Our verdict: there are fewer settings all over the place than in HiveOS, which makes it easier to learn, and that is precisely the aim of this OS. Above all, it works properly.

What about today?

Since Ethereum moved to proof of stake in September 2022, Ethereum can no longer be mined with graphics cards and GPU mining income has collapsed. Easy Mining OS's features and price may also have changed since: check them on the publisher's website before getting started.

To compare with other systems, see our HiveOS tutorial and our review of minerstat OS, or find all our guides on the tutorials page. To mine today, discover our ASIC miners.
