Autotune
Also called: autotuning, chip auto-tuning
Autotune is a firmware feature that sets the frequency and voltage of each chip in a miner on its own to find the best balance.
Not all the chips in a miner are identical. Even from the same production run, some hold a high frequency without a hitch while others give up sooner. The factory setting applies a cautious value to all of them. Autotune, also called chip auto-tuning, instead tests each chip and assigns it its own frequency and voltage.
In concrete terms, the firmware runs the machine, measures errors and temperature chip by chip, then adjusts the settings in small increments until it reaches the chosen goal: more hashrate, lower power consumption or a compromise between the two. This tuning phase takes a while on first start-up, and the hashrate may fluctuate during that time. After that, the profile found is saved and reused.
For the user, the benefit is getting the best out of the machine without spending hours testing values by hand. It is also the recommended starting point before any overclocking: you begin from a stable baseline measured on the actual machine. To judge the result, compare the average hashrate and power consumption with the product page values over at least a day, and check that chip temperatures stay reasonable.
The HappyMining firmware includes chip-by-chip autotune for the Antminer S19, S21, T19 and T21, with power profiles and an automatic fallback to the last stable profile. We install it free of charge on machines bought from us.
