Equihash

Equihash is a memory-intensive proof-of-work algorithm used by Zcash. Its hashrate is measured in solutions per second (Sol/s).

Equihash is a proof-of-work algorithm introduced in 2016 by two researchers at the University of Luxembourg. It is based on a well-known mathematical problem, the generalized birthday problem, which takes a lot of memory to solve. Once a solution has been found, however, verifying it is very fast.

Zcash, a cryptocurrency launched in 2016 and known for its shielded transactions, has used it from the start. Other projects have adopted Equihash with different parameters, giving several variants, written for example as 200,9 or 144,5. These variants are not interchangeable: a miner built for one will not necessarily work on another. Although it was originally designed to resist specialized chips, Equihash is now mined with ASICs in its main version.

One thing worth knowing: Equihash hashrate is not expressed in hashes but in solutions per second, written Sol/s, kSol/s or MSol/s. So never compare these figures with those of a Bitcoin or Kaspa miner. On the product page of an Antminer Z series, check which Equihash variant is supported, the efficiency and power consumption, and the compatible pools.

Our Zcash collection brings together the Equihash miners we offer.
