PDU

Also called: power distribution unit, rack PDU

A PDU (power distribution unit) splits one power feed across several machines through protected C13 or C19 outlets.

PDU stands for Power Distribution Unit. It is a kind of professional power strip, designed for server racks and mining farms. It takes a high-capacity power feed, single-phase or three-phase, and distributes it to several machines through standard outlets, most often C13 or C19.

Unlike a household power strip, a PDU is sized for high, continuous loads. Basic models simply distribute the power. More advanced models add a circuit breaker per group of outlets, a consumption display, and even per-outlet metering and remote switching over the network. That last feature is valuable in a mining farm: you can restart a frozen machine without going on site.

To choose a PDU, add up the power of the machines you want to connect and keep a margin. Check the input type (single-phase or three-phase industrial plug, maximum current), the number and type of outlets, and the built-in protection. On a three-phase supply, spread the miners so the three phases stay balanced. As with the rest of the electrical installation, the connection should be done by an electrician.
