Cooling

Hydro cooling

Also called: water cooling, watercooling, liquid cooling

Cooling by liquid flowing through plates mounted on the chips. Hydro miners are quieter and pack more power into less space.

Hydro cooling, also called water cooling or liquid cooling, replaces fans with a liquid circuit. On Hydro-type miners, such as some Antminer series, each hashboard is pressed against a cold plate through which a liquid flows, usually treated water or a water-glycol mix. The machine has almost no internal fans left.

Liquid carries heat far more efficiently than air. The chips stay at a stable temperature, which allows higher power in a compact enclosure. The heated liquid then flows to a heat exchanger, often a dry cooler placed outdoors, which cools it before sending it back to the machine. The circuit also includes a pump, hoses, fittings and an expansion tank. The result: much quieter operation and heat that is easy to recover, for example to heat water or a building.

A hydro miner needs a proper installation: a sealed circuit, a liquid flow rate and inlet temperature that match the product page, monitored liquid quality, and often a three-phase power supply. Before buying, check the required flow rate, the liquid temperature range, the fitting diameter and the power consumption.

Our dedicated Antminer Hydro page presents these machines in detail, and we are happy to advise you on the right installation for them.
